What is First Tee's Purpose?

We know that character is something you cultivate.  We exist to enable kids to build the strength of character that empowers them through a lifetime of new challenges.

How do you build character through golf?

We see golf as a metaphor for life – a game with unexpected challenges and ups and downs that help build strengths beyond the technical skills to play the game. Through introspective questions, interactive games, and immersive golf exercises, we design each lesson to help kids build a better understanding of themselves and empower them to strengthen the parts of them that they take to everything they do. Research proves it works.

Will my child be participating in a safe environment?

First Tee Eastern Michigan committed to creating and maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for all participants and individuals affiliated with the organization. As part of our commitment, all employees, coaches and volunteers must complete a background check before working with our youth. In addition, all employees, coaches, volunteers and board members will be required to complete the SafeSport training program.

What are the core focus areas of helping kids develop?

We focus on helping kids develop their character, resilience, self-confidence, and inner strength. Throughout our program we use golf to empower this growth while enabling kids to learn and play the game.

Who can play?

We offer group golf lessons to kids and teens ages 5-18, regardless of background or previous experience. All we ask is that kids come with an open mind and positive attitude.

How do I register my child for FTEM programming?
Do I need to provide golf equipment for my kid?

First Tee Eastern Michigan provides all necessary equipment, so there’s no need to bring your own!

While special golf attire is not required, we do ask that all participants wear closed-toe shoes—Crocs are not allowed.

What if my child has never picked up a golf club before?

We know it can feel intimidating to start something new. Everyone was a beginner once and our coaches are trained in creating a supportive environment to make kids feel comfortable and assure they have fun while learning about themselves and golf.

Is there competition and physical activity?

Absolutely! Kids stay active by walking 9 holes of golf and coaches make lessons competitive while having fun. As participants get older, they have the chance to compete at national events held across the country.

Financial Concerns?

Thanks to our amazing sponsors, First Tee Eastern Michigan is able to offer low-cost programming and financial aid for those in need.

During the registration process, you’ll have the opportunity to complete a financial aid request form based on your specific need. Each request will be reviewed accordingly to ensure support is provided where needed.

We’re committed to making golf accessible for all! If you have further questions, please contact Paige Kopczyk at [email protected].

What do I do if I forgot my account information?

If you have previously registered for FTEM programming and cannot remember your account information, contact Paige Kopczyk at [email protected].

Is it possible for my child to be placed in a group with their friends?

We completely understand the desire to keep your child with their friends and continue building those relationships! However, at First Tee, one of our key commitments is Collaborating with Others, which is why we do not guarantee pairing kids with their friends each week. This approach helps participants meet new friends, develop social skills, and embrace diversity, all while learning and growing together.
